The Del Mar Racetrack will present a Taco & Tequila Festival on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Enjoy tasty tacos from a wide variety of San Diego’s top vendors and restaurants, special tequila drinks and sampling. Del Mar racing season continues

The Del Mar racetrack 2024 season opened July 20 and runs through Sept. 8. North Coast Rep Theatre to present humorous one-woman show ‘Italian Bred’

Italian Bred, the hilarious and heartwarming hit one-woman show, written by and starring Candice Guardino is coming to North Coast Rep in Solana Beach on Aug. 19 and Aug. 20. Italian Bred is a funny show that is based on true life events and told through the eyes of a little girl growing up Italian on Staten Island.

Batiquitos Lagoon family walk

Batiquitos Lagoon will be having a family walk on Aug. 17 at 10 a.m. This walk and talk will focus on the geology of the lagoon area and the larger region. Past climate eras will also be discussed. The walk will be led by Eleanora (Norrie) Robbins, PhD. She is a geologist retired from the US Geological Survey and SDSU. Her specialties are paleopalynology and geomicrobiology.Right now, she’s in love with the Pleistocene (Ice Age). The walk will be about a mile in length and is suitable for families with children. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather, wear a hat and sunscreen and bring water. Space is limited, first come, first served. It’s recommended to come 15 minutes early. Golf tournament benefits community members with disabilities

The San Diego Foundation runs its 31st annual Charity Golf Tournament to benefit children and adults with disabilities Sept. 9 at La Valle Coastal Club and Resort, 5690 Cancha de Golf. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration and breakfast, followed by a shotgun start at 10 a.m. and lunch on the course. The awards reception and silent auction will begin at 3 p.m. Proceeds from the tournament will provide funding for wheelchair-accessible vans and support for Our Place, The Arc of San Diego’s wellness program that provides adaptive yoga, fitness, nutrition and wellness classes and holiday gifts for clients. Helen Woodward’s In-PAWson Surf Dog lessons

The dog days of summer are here and with them comes everyone’s favorite PAWter sport – dog surfing. For those who have ever wondered if their pup might get a good wag out of the waves, Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Surf Dog classes have returned to Del Mar Dog Beach. Water-loving woofers can try their paw at the sport and get prepped for the Center’s annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon coming up this Sept. 8.

Dog Surfing lessons are $50 per session, per SurFur. (All proceeds support the pets and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center.)The first of three sessions was held July 28 at Del Mar Dog Beach. Beach Blanket Movie Night in Solana Beach

The City of Solana Beach and the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission will host the 18th annual Beach Blanket Movie Night (BBMN) event on Saturday, Aug. 10, 6 p.m. at Fletcher Cove Park. This family-friendly event is free and open to the public. The evening begins with live music by Jackstraws Surf Band, followed by the feature presentation “The Little Mermaid”.

BBMN offers plenty of refreshments (pizza, popcorn, cookies, and brownies) and a free giveaway with prizes, including a Firewire surfboard, beach cruiser bicycle, wetsuits, gift cards and more. Refreshment tickets will be available inside the park. Cash only for food and refreshments, no credit cards.

All proceeds from BBMN will be used to benefit future Solana Beach Parks and Recreation projects or events. Bring a blanket, pack a picnic.Attendees are encouraged to arrive car free.

Batiquitos Lagoon: ‘The Snakes We Live With’ presentation

Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad will hold a presentation on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. titled “The Snakes We Live With” by Bruce Ireland and Allen Chornak with their gang of volunteers who relocate snakes from residences to more appropriate habitat. Meet some of their favorite venomous and non-venomous snakes, including recent rescues from the local reptile community. This free, family event is good for ages 4 plus. The Encinitas 101 MainStreet Association will hold the 35th Annual Taste of Encinitas on Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., along Coast Hwy 101 in downtown Encinitas. With the purchase of a ticket, participants will be able to enjoy tastes from a number of local restaurants, sample wine and beer at Sip Stops, and enjoy a variety of live music.In addition to the Sip Stops, the Taste will feature locations serving non-alcoholic beverages, such as non-alcoholic beer, mocktails, kombucha and coffee.Tickets can be purchased at www.encinitas101.com/store/p/taste-of-encinitas-ticket.Tickets are priced at $50. Coastal Roots Farm hosts Farm Film & Music Series

Coastal Roots Farm, a nonprofit, organic community farm and education center inspired by Jewish values in Encinitas, hosts its annual summer Farm Film & Music Series, designed to bring community together around shared values to protect people and the planet. The series’ fourth film and outdoor event will take place on Thursday, Aug. 22 and will feature “Undammed.” Gates open at 6 p.m.

San Dieguito chapter of Brandeis University Annual Opening Meeting

The San Dieguito chapter of Brandeis University, with more than 200 members, is holding its Annual Opening Meeting on Aug. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club in Solana Beach, and all are invited. At the luncheon, San Dieguito chapter facilitators of social and study groups will present the upcoming year’s offerings, which are varieand extensive.

The offerings include walks, art museums, field trips, movies, mah jongg, canasta, News Junkies, Engineering Wonders of the World, Borscht Belt comedians, and dozens more. Newcomers are welcome, and it is not necessary to be affiliated as an alumnus of Brandeis.

Membership is $60 and supports Brandeis University’s libraries, scholarships and research efforts. The cost for the luncheon is $45 with a $5 taxable deduction. The deadline to register is Aug. 15.

If there’s ever been a time to visit the San Diego Natural History Museum, it’s during its 150th anniversary year. Coast to Crest Challenge under way

The Coast to Crest Challenge starts its eighth year this month for hikers to sample San Dieguito River Park’s trail network by finishing a series of five hikes, organized by the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy. The deadline to complete this year’s series is June 30, 2025. Visit sdrvc.org.

Animal shelter offers pet loss support

The Rancho Coastal Humane Society has a Pet Loss Support Program with free, one-on-one, 20-minute telephone consultations for people who recently lost pets or are saying goodbye to their pets or have pets suffering from major illnesses. City of Encinitas Call for Artists

Professional and emerging artists are invited to apply for juried exhibitions in Encinitas. Artists who create two- and three-dimensional artwork and live or work in San Diego County may apply. There are no fees to apply and no commissions on any artwork sales. Exhibitions will be on view for approximately four months in 2025 and include an artist reception with Art Night Encinitas. Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be considered. Artists creating two-and three-dimensional works in a variety of media are welcome to apply for a solo exhibition that will be held at one of two art spaces in Encinitas. Arts organizations are also encouraged to apply for a group show representing two-and three-dimensional works created by visual artists in their membership. The La Jolla Music Society will offer free learning and engagement activities from July 26 to Aug. 24 as part of the SummerFest 2024 at The Conrad in La Jolla, including open rehearsals, artist lounges, encounters, coaching workshops and musical preludes that are all open to the public. The theme is “Inside Stories” and the festival will include 21 performances and 50 free education activities over four weeks.
